Melanistic

We acquired our first Melanistic ball pythons into our collection in 1994. They were imported from Africa through Strictly Reptiles.

Melanistic ball pythons are almost pure black. As juveniles you can barely see any pattern. As they mature the pattern becomes more visible. Their belly scales are a charcoal gray color. We are working with one of the darkest Melanistic ball pythons in existence. We have only ever seen one other Melanistic ball python that is as dark as the animal we are working with.

In the summer of 2002 we hatched out 7 ball pythons that were a result of breeding our darkest Melanistic female to her son. Out of the 7 babies none were Melanistic, but 3 of the babies hatched with vary strange facial patterns. Their labial scales and labial pits were all outlined in jet-black & the black flecking on their bellies formed a black stripe that we have never seen before.

Due to the bright orange sides of the Melanistic offspring we decided to take a chance and breed our Pastel Jungle to our Melanistic female. Well, just as we expected, the hatchlings from this breeding, were some of the most brightly marked Pastel Jungles we have produced.

This page will be updated as future breedings reveal more information.
